Leadership 3: Foundations of Leadership

This course is designed for newly promoted police lieutenants or lieutenants seeking to enhance their leadership development. This one-week, 40-hour, course emphasizes foundational leadership considerations, including: communication; motivation; planning and decision-making; political management and public testimony; legal issues; a Use of Force Case Study presented by a recognized subject matter expert, future trends in police organizations; policing technology; building trust; policing a diverse society; evidence-based and intelligence-led policing and ethics. The course requires outside selected readings and a reflection paper on assigned topics. Students will receive a personal copy of “Extreme Ownership” by Jocko Willinik.
